Maybe mom does know best when it comes to skin care

During childhood and young adulthood, you can probably recall the echo of your mother telling you to put on sunscreen or to wash your face and to don’t pick your zits. Well, turns out that mom is spot on with a lot of her advice.

Sunscreen is always important

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter the sun is always shining. Even on cloudy days, when you don’t think you can get a sunburn, its UV rays can still penetrate the clouds and if you’re outdoors long enough, you can get burned. Mom is 100% right – always put on your sunscreen before heading outdoors for fun or work. And if you’re outside for long periods, then yes, reapply! And if you’re at the beach or pool don’t forget the tops of your feet and the part in your hair – just like Mom (and Dad) told you.

Don’t go to bed without washing your face

Again, Mother knows best, always wash your face before bed. The grit and grime of the day will wreak havoc on your skin as you sleep. Left on makeup, environmental pollution, and your sweat will clog pores – and make your pillows and sheets gross too. And dirty pillowcases fester all sorts of similar problems. Mom is right again, washing your face, even if its quickly, can help prevent skin issues.

Keep to a routine

Which plays right into Mom’s unknowing guidance – keep a simple skincare routine and you’ll be better off. If you make it habit to wash your face before bed, it’s a small leap to layering on a moisturizer or serum too. And if you care for your skin every day, you’ll be preventing future issues as you age.

Don’t pick at your face

We all eventually come to realize that picking zits or popping pimples generally leads to worse problems with your skin. You’re spreading those bacteria in and on top of your skin and causing trauma as you inevitably use too much force. So, stick to pimple popping videos on YouTube or TikTok and don’t pick at your face. In fact, the less you touch your face throughout the day, the better your skin will be overall, as you’ll transfer less dirt and bacteria to your skin.

It’s better to stick with a simple, healthy skincare routine, to keep your complexion looking great. Give Mom a hug the next time you see her and tell her how smart and “right” she has always been. She’ll love it… and will likely give you some more sage advice.
